Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task, Lauren and I decided to re-create the music video 'four, five seconds', by Rihanna, Paul McCartney and Kanye West. Our aim was to try and replicate the exact shot from the real music video. Although it did not turn out exactly the same, we are still pleased with our final result as we did learn a lot from doing this, which will help us with our final music video.

In terms of pre-production, we spent a long time researching popular music music videos in the 'pop' genre. We used Youtube to look at a variety of music videos including: Budapest, Alesha Dixon and Four, Five, Seconds. We decided on 'Four, Five, Seconds' as it had shots and editing techniques we wanted to try and use i.e. colour grading and silhouette effect. Using a online website we created a detailed storyboard of the first minute of 'Four, Five Seconds' which included pictures of each shot we wanted to replicate and how long they will be shown for. In terms of location planning, we wanted to use a green screen. We therefore filmed our task in our media classroom where we had access to a very large green screen. As a result of this we had few safety hazards and a small risk assessment. Due to the minimalistic style of the music video, we only needed a guitar and black denim jacket which we used on two of our singers. Rihanna wore minimal makeup so we recreated this look, making Isadora look very natural.

When filming our preliminary task, we took multiple shots to ensure it was a close copy of the real music video. Whilst filming the music video, we had Youtube playing 'four, five seconds' making it easier for our singers to imitate the actions and learn the song lyrics. We also used normal lighting as well as studio lights to brighten our performer and green screen so we could get the best quality possible.  To get a variety of shots we used the zoom effect on the Sony NEX-VG30EH PAL Camcorder with 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Power Zoom Lens which was very effective.

During our post-production stage we used Final Cut Pro to edit our work. We definitely preferred Final Cut Pro to iMovie as it not only gave us more options when it came to editing but gave us a better outcome as we found it easier to use. We had to use a Youtube Converter to download the song to import into Final Cut which we had to match to the performer lip-syncing. Before we did this we had to mute the clips we had filmed incase our performer was ahead or behind of the song. We used colour grading throughout our preliminary task, using a black and white effect, which was the exact same to the real video. Another editing technique we used was creating a silhouette, as we previously said it turned out differently as we expected however we still liked it.

To conclude, We learnt a lot of new techniques as well as developing our skills both on final cut pro and when using the camera. However when making our final music video I will ensure we take more shots to ensure the singers are singing the right lyrics at the right time.

Evaluation 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Below is the script: At A2, the music video brief meant that our research of real media texts had to be much more extensive and on a larger scale. My group and I watched a huge range of films from the dance genre, especially Sia’s, ‘Chandelier’, but most significantly many BeyoncĂ©’s music videos, including ‘Halo’ and ‘What now’. However, watching so many music videos from this genre, led me to notice the difference between narrative and performance. This led us to do a considerably larger amount of research- looking into different types of music videos to identify typical media conventions, which is much less genre defined as A2.   Therefore, like ‘What now’, our music video had a combination of both performance and narrative, which put a distinctly contemporary spin on our music video. However, our researched was not just limited to one genre, like it was at AS. Watching other music video’s like Miley Cyrus’ ‘Malibu’ and Goyte’s ‘Somebody that I used to know’, we d...

Magazine Advert options

Lauren and I created 2 different magazine adverts as part of our preliminary task. We used the online website 'canva'. This website was really useful as it allowed us to choose from a range of different templates, which we could then edit and adapt to create something in keeping with out music video. We created two to give us options and a larger range of choice. However after receiving audience feed back we were told one was too plain and simple and the other ones writing almost ruined the image. Therefore we will try and create another with similar ideas however also take on board our audience feedback.

Mojo Audience

Having read the profile of 'Mojo' magazine profile i was able to see what type of audience they attract. As previously stated they attract an audience 'truly obsessed with music', whether it be 'rock, folk, soul' or 'reggae', but most significantly it 'celebrates quality over popularity'. It can perhaps therefore be assumed that Mojo attracts a more 'indie' or alternative audience rather than a typical mainstream audience.  Looking at the different types of bands and individual musicians, it is clear the magazine attracts an older audience who are more familiar with the type of music, rather than a young teenager interested in mainstream pop. Investigating into the 'Mojo' magazine gave me a better insight into the type of audience I wish to attract when creating my own magazine advert. Due to the song 'what now' being in the pop genre, in turn I would expect to see a mainstream audience- perhaps a teenagers and young ...
