The history of music videos

As part of my research and planning, I am going to look into the history of music videos. I will look at 5 artists music videos and compare their most recent and successful music videos with thier eldest ones. Whilst doing this I will evaluate how the music videos have developed and changed but also, whether there are key features and motifs which are still used in old and new music videos. Rihanna- Unfaithful 2006 and Wild thoughts 2017 Immediately, you can see a clear change in Rihanna's music videos and how they have developed in the past 11 years. The location is probably the most dramatic initial change which shapes your view on the rest of the video. 'Unfaithful' begins with a much longer introduction setting the scene for the narrative, which is to take place in what looks like a dressing room where she remembers flashbacks of a boyfriend. This scene is also much more simple, and although it has changing locations it presents a much more realistic life...

Research and planning-collage

After looking at a large amount of iconic shots from different music videos within the pop genre, the key feature which reoccurred in almost every shot was the use of the close-up shot on the artist. This was one of the conventions which Andrew Goodwin identified, therefore in my music video I will ensure I use a large variety of close-ups, including extreme close-ups and medium close-ups in order to make my music video as effective as possible. As well as this, I recognised a large amount of the shots were in black and white (especially the more recent ones). I will therefore aim to incorporate this into my music video.

Inspiration for our Music Video

I've watched a number of music videos recently, all of which had aspects I could incorporate into my music video. Countdown  I really liked Beyonce's music video, 'Countdown', not only because dancing which I would like to use, but also the effective editing techniques. At points the screen was split into multiple sections, each of which had different colours and actions. I would really like to incorporate these elements into my music video. The audience Beyonce attracts through the brand she has created are similar to my target audience, therefore by incorporating the same editing techniques and style of her music video I will meet the demands of my target demographic. Thats what I like I began looking through current popular songs and Bruno Mars 'Thats what I like' was included in this. Initially looking at it I didn't find it very interesting, however I really liked the animations in it and would therefore like to try and recreate something simi...

Editing year 6 clips!

Yesterday the year 6's came in for their induction day where each of them filmed a short video about themselves. After they had completed this we were able to develop our skills using iMovie. This involved adding their video with a green screen and a chosen picture. We then added music they had chosen behind the clip. Although we had already used these skills, it was useful as we were able to become more comfortable with them and the software.

Knole House & Orlando

Last Friday, both our English and Media class went on a trip to Knole House in Kent, which used to belong to Vita Sackville West, Virginia Woolfs lover. The day was based around Virginia Woolfs novel 'Orlando' who's character changes sex from man to women, whilst living for centuries. In the morning we were taken on a tour of the house in the style of a performance. Each room we were taken too represented a different time zone and their particular view on gender and gender identity, in relation to Vita Sackville West, Virginia Wolf and who 'Orlando' actually was. To see 17th, 18th and 19th century views on women was not only shocking but allowed me to challenge my initial thoughts on gender. In the afternoon we took part in a small workshop, where we discussed gender and how it should not just described as 'binary' or two opposites. After this we watched Tilda Swinton's 1992 adaptation of 'Orlando' where we could see the progression of women...

Music Video research- Sia 'Chandelier'

We began to look at music videos with dancing in them, to see the length of the shots and type of shots. All shots in this music video were extremely long, so we would therefore like to incorporate a combination of both long and short shots.
